SOTW: Suzi Wu – Taken Care Of

This week’s Single of the Week is Taken Care of by Suzi Wu.

Starting with some simple guitar strumming, the 19-year-old Londoner mutters “She asked me who’s taking care of me, I said I take care of me” before the song quickly becomes an interesting hybrid of light hip-hop instrumentation and indie-rock. Infectious and an easy listen, the production contains it’s share of quirks, with bird chirps and chimes recalling the carefree nature and busy production styles of minor indie hit Cash, Diamond Rings, swimmingpools by Dena and less distorted cuts from Black Honey and Wolf Alice.

Premiered on Beats1, Wu explained “‘Taken Care Of‘ is about the things that made and broke me as a child, and finding power in my inability to be perfect. I wrote it for teens and children who are lost and who lead double lives.”

It is the second track to be released from Teenage Witch, Wu’s debut EP via Lucky Number due out on September 8th.
