Typically, the hip-hop scene has always been marked as a very heterosexual department of the music world; videos featuring scantily-clad ladies and images of masculinity and bravado. However, Brooklyn based Music Bear Tony Banks is fighting against the stereotype finding a niche for himself within the genre.
Tony’s style isn’t strictly hip-hop, there’s elements of dance, rap and house within his music, straddling a number of style in order to create his own musical identity. Yet Tony finds much of this identity within his pertinent and poignant lyrics that dominate the infectious beats he lays down.
His latest single ‘Run!’, taken from the upcoming album, Yes Homo, features the talents of JwlB and EarthTone as well, speaking of the current trials of America’s political chaos and racial prejudices.
After a difficult childhood, Tony turned to music and quickly found an affinity for forming intelligent lyrics, pulsating beats and smooth rhythms which he exhibits perfectly in ‘Run!’.
Taking inspiration from some of the best, including Missy Elliot, Michael Jackson and Andre 3000, Banks creates a dance-inducing brand of hip-hop that he labels as ‘Move Ya Feet, feel good’ music – a fitting observation.
